I'm sure you've noticed by now that these were once beer bottles, this has been something I've been tinkering with for a couple of years. I originally made some to help raise money for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, they sold well and I went on to making some into outdoor candles. The candles looked really good, plus I recycled old candle offcuts from local restaurants so the whole project was a huge recycling success story. And if that wasn't enough I made them into citronella candles which wards off the bugs in the evening.
There were a few design problems which were quickly overcome to make the candles safe and a number of improvements into cutting the bottles which led to designing and making a bottle cutting machine.
But after all the fun of making the machine I started on other projects and left this idea as something to come back to one day.
Well, just over a year later, I've resurrected the idea and have eventually put the glasses on the website, I think they look great.
There is a lot of work that goes into each glass and not all glasses pass the quality control stage, but due to the new cutting machine we are able to reduce the rejects and the labour cost and keep the price much lower than originally intended which now makes this a much more viable project.
The bottles I use have the plastic type label on them, or in the case of the Corona bottle the label is printed on the glass. This means the glasses can be washed which would be a problem with paper labels.
The labels are very resilient and will withstand the odd trip through the dish washer but I will have to recommend hand washing these if you are going to use them regularly.
The edges have been ground down so there are definitely no sharp edges and if you drop them on a hard surface they will break.
We've tried to keep all the different glasses at the same height but due to the label position or the shape of the neck the Corona, Sol and Heineken glasses are approx 8mm higher and all the others are 8mm lower.
When doing a little bit of market research (asking friends), it would seem that everyone loves the idea of the glasses because it's a great talking point or ice breaker at parties but most people fell into 2 main groups. Those that wanted half a dozen of the same type of glass and those that wanted half a dozen different types. Personally I like the different types because it is easier for each person to find their drink at a party but what do I know, so I've decided to offer both.
